Female pattern baldness is a serious problem with many women. They have to go through a lot of psychological suffering due to hair loss. Often they go for various treatments like hair transplantation. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in women. It is seen that the condition occurs often after menopause.

In the case of female pattern baldness there is thinning of hair rather than the baldness as seen in men. Even the pattern of hair loss vary greatly in women and the treatment for every person can vary according to the need.

There are three patterns of androgenetic alopecia in women. In one pattern there is thinning of hair on the top of the scalp. In another pattern there is thinning of hair and patches of greater scalp hair loss. Women have hair loss from the front of the scalp to mid-scalp in the third pattern of hair loss in androgenetic alopecia.

There are many causes of female pattern baldness. The main reason is production of androgenetic hormones and its effect on hair follicles. This is also the main cause of male pattern baldness. It's only the pattern of female pattern baldness that differentiates it from male pattern baldness.

There are other causes of female pattern baldness, too. On reason is Alopecia areata. In this case there is patchy loss of hair from the scalp and sometimes eyebrows and hair loss can be episodic and recurrent.

Traction alopecia is another cause of hair fall. It is associated with consistent traction pressure on hair follicles. It can be due to tight braiding.

Trichotillomania is compulsive hair plucking that can also cause hair loss. Another reason of pattern baldness in women can be telogen effluvium. In this case there is accelerated hair loss that may have hormonal, nutritional, drug-associated or stress-associated causes. In the condition of triangular alopecia there is hair loss from the area of the temples.

It is seen that genes inherited from parents play an important role in androgenetic alopecia. It is often seen that paternal hair loss may correlate with the chances of alopecia in sons. In the same way variations in the Androgen Receptor gene, which can correlate with baldness, are X linked and thus inherited from one's maternal grandfather or grandmother.

It is seen that androgen receptors help the human body to respond to dihydrotestosterone. Variations in the Androgen Receptor gene lead to increased activity of androgen receptors in hair follicles.

Proper treatment is necessary in the case of female pattern baldness. It is seen that temporary hair loss like in the case of hormonal changes can be resolved comparatively easily.

In the case of a prolonged period of temporary hair loss a woman may have to go for full or partial temporary hair prosthesis. It should be done only after the consultation with a trained and experienced professional.
