Female pattern baldness is embarrassing for women. In this case there is thinning of hair instead of the usual baldness seen in the case of men. Follicular unit transplantation is a very effective method used in the case of female pattern baldness.

The main reason of female pattern baldness is production of androgenetic hormones and its effect on hair follicles. Incidentally it is also the main cause of hair loss in men. However there is a certain difference between the hair loss in men and women.

Another reason of hair loss in women is alopecia areata. There is a patchy loss of hair on the scalp in this case. Sometimes loss of hair and eyebrows can be episodic and recurrent. Traction alopecia is also a cause of hair fall.

In the case of female pattern baldness women go for various treatments including follicular unit transplantation and hair transplantation. Follicular unit transplantation is a very effective method of hair restoration. The operation needs to be performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon. The surgery involves transplantation of hair from the permanent zone in the back of the scalp into areas affected by hair loss by using individual follicular units.

In follicular unit transplantation the donor tissue must be removed in one piece to prevent any damage. In this operation single strip harvesting is very important as it preserves the follicular units and prevents damage to the individual hair follicles. The surgeon uses small recipient sites in the operation. In the surgery microscope is used to avoid any damage to follicular units.

There is a certain procedure followed in the case of follicular unit transplantation. In the surgery all the follicular units are removed from the donor tissue under total microscopic control. It is done to avoid any damage to the units. With the use of the stereomicroscopic dissection in follicular unit transplantation there is an increased yield of both the absolute number of follicular units and the total amount of hair.

There is a certain difference between follicular unit transplantation and mini-micro grafting methods. In the former method graft sizes are determined by nature whereas in mini-micro grafting the graft sizes are determined by the surgeon who cuts the donor tissue into the sizes he wants.

There is another difference between follicular unit transplantation and mini-micrografting. In the former preserving follicular units and keeping hair follicles intact are felt to be very important but it is not the case in the later method.

More importance is given to speed and economics in mini-micrografting method of hair restoration. A multi-bladed knife is used to quickly generate thin strips of tissue and then direct visualization is used to cut the tissue in this method. The procedure of mini-micrografting is cheaper and shorter compared to follicular unit transplantation.
