Women face the problem of female pattern baldness due to various reasons including heredity. In this case there is mainly thinning of hair instead of the kind of baldness seen in men. Women may go for hair transplantation in the case of female pattern baldness.

The production of androgenetic hormones and its effect on hair follicles is the main cause of female pattern baldness. Alopecia areata is another reason of the hair loss. Pattern baldness due to this reason causes patchy loss of hair on the scalp.

Hair transplantation is a long-term and effective method used in the case of female pattern baldness. This surgical method involves removal of hair-bearing portion of the scalp and placing it on the area of the scalp where there is no growth of hair.

A surgeon performs the hair transplantation operation with proper precautions taken. The operation takes about 4 hours. Before the operation proper care is taken and antibacterial chemicals are used on the scalp, and the area to be operated is shampooed. The patient gets to chose between single and multiple sessions. She is advised to avoid drinking alcohol some days before the hair transplantation operation.

The operation involves harvesting of a strip of hair from an area of the scalp where there is growth of hair. The usual size of the donor strip is 1-1.5 x 15-30 cm. The surgeon takes a great care in the operation and removes excess fatty tissues without damaging the follicular cells.

There is use of binocular microscopes in the operation and a fine needle is used to puncture the sites for receiving the grafts and placing them in a predetermined density and pattern.

Individual grafts are placed in the right places of the scalp using the fine needle. For a good density 50 grafts per square centimeter should be used.

There is a need of some care to be taken after the hair transplantation operation. The patient should not expose the operated area to the sun light. The surgeon advises the patient to avoid use of shampoo for some days after the treatment.

In some cases hair from the area displayed in the surgey fall out. It is due to a natural shock of displacement. The patient doesn't need to worry about that as after some months there is re-growth of hair on the portion of the scalp.

After the hair transplantation treatment there is hair fall from only those areas of the scalp where there was no operation done. Some people prefer to go through some medication to stop hair fall from those areas of the scalp to stop further hair fall.

Hair transplantation is now-a-days the most popular method of hair restoration. Due to technical development it has become comparatively convenient and affordable. Even the time taken in the surgery is reduced. Due to technical advancement less time is taken in separating each follicular unit and placing them.

Hair transplantation is a comparatively costly method. However the cost depends on various factors like the choice of the surgeon and region where the operation is being conducted. The surgeon charges according to his qualification and experience.

The total cost of the hair transplantation operation depends on the total number of grafts needed in the surgery. In a normal operation the patient needs around 500 to 2000 grafts that cost around $1500 to $20,000.
